The new moon in Sagittarius occurs in the early evening of Dec 12, 2023, Central time. Sagittarius is associated with the search for truth, as well as an interest in philosophy and religion. The energy of Sagittarius is very aspirational, and we are drawn to optimism and idealism. Every year during the month of December people of many religions prepare to celebrate holidays that are filled with religious meanings, family traditions, and roughly correspond with the winter solstice which in the northern hemisphere begins the return of sunlight. After the winter solstice, occurring this year on December 22nd, the days will begin to grow longer.
On this New Moon the Sun and Moon are still within a conjunction of Mars, but a wide one compared to last month, and all three planets trine Uranus. There may be some hope that the conflict, fighting, and anger associated with Mars, will begin to change, and the trine from the renegade planet of unpredictability Uranus, will help ease the tensions in ways which we don’t expect.
On December 13th Mercury will turn retrograde at 8 degrees Capricorn, traveling in retrograde motion until January 2nd, 2024. Mercury will travel back into Sagittarius from December 22, and stay there until January 15th, making the last two weeks of the retrograde even more difficult for people born with late degrees of mutable signs: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. Given all the travel and family gatherings that happen in December this suggests that both communication and transportation may see their share of problems. It’s always good to have a backup plan in place during one of the busiest travel times of the year, and this retrograde supports that idea. Sagittarian individuals are known for their truth-telling and bluntness, so the retrograde may bring an extra dose of that as well.
